I am very pleased by the results of the NPR poll. There are so many wonderful books that I adore that made the list. I was not surprised that John Green made the list 5 times! And also not surprising is, well, .. if Cassandra Clare wrote it ... it's on the top 100, same with Richelle Mead! I have had a bit of fun marking some of my favorites. I also went a head and posted the complete 235 finalist. It is such a impressive list. I hope you take the time and look at it. I have read a lot of them, and have more than I like to admit in my TBR pile, but more interesting to me are the ones that I have not heard of or just never considered reading.

When I was reading both lists I was a bit surprised that one of my favorite series was nowhere to be found. There are even few I am surprised to see on the list at all, but that is what is so much fun getting to vote, everyone gets to have their opinion. :O)

YA Rules: NPR's 'Best-Ever Teen Fiction' Poll <==click for original article
Readers are passionate about their favorite books. More than 75,000 people voted in NPR's Best-Ever Teen Fiction poll, and while it was "no surprise to see Harry Potter and the Hunger Games trilogy on top, this year's list also highlights some writers we weren't as familiar with. For example, John Green, author of the 2012 hit The Fault in Our Stars, appears five times in the top 100," NPR Books noted. The list was compiled from more than 1,200 nominations, which were whittled down to 235 finalists.

In an Atlantic magazine essay headlined "Why Do Female Authors Dominate Young-Adult Fiction?" Meghan Lewit observed: "Of those 235 titles, 147 (or 63%) were written by women--a parity that would seem like a minor miracle in some other genres. Female authors took the top three slots, and an approximately equal share of the top 100. As a comparison, you'd have to scroll all the way to number 20 on last summer's Top 100 Science-Fiction and Fantasy list to find a woman's name (Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley)."

Top 100 Teen Books <===Click for original article

From NPR.ORG

August 7, 2012

More than 75,000 ballots were cast in our annual summer reader's survey — click here to see the full list of 100 books, complete with links and descriptions. Ethan Wate has spent most of his life longing to escape the stiflingly small Southern town of Gatlin. He never thought he would meet the girl of his dreams, Lena Duchannes, who unveiled a secretive, powerful, and cursed side of Gatlin, hidden in plain sight. Back in Gatlin, Lena is making her own bargains for Ethan's return, vowing to do whatever it takes -- even if that means trusting old enemies or risking the lives of the family and friends Ethan left to protect.

Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.

Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.

But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?
BLOOD-STARLIGHT
Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone — the first novel in a trilogy — centered on a blue-haired girl named Karou who encounters unusual creatures and dangerous angels as she travels the world to carry out mysterious errands.

Now the sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight, is slated for a Nov. 6 release. It picks up where the best-selling Daughter left off. From the official description: “In this stunning sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Karou must come to terms with who and what she is, and how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, mysteries and secrets, new characters and old favorites, Days of Blood and Starlight brings the richness, color and intensity of the first book to a brand new canvas.”

Judging from Daughter of Smoke and Bone — which EW’s Sara Vilkomerson called a “smartly plotted, surprising, and fiercely compelling read” — the sequel is well worth getting excited about. Check out a larger version of the brand new cover below!
All that said, I am so very glad that I was <strike>coerced</strike> convinced by my dear friend Nancy to read this book. Mr Green told the story in such a way that even though you know somewhat what the outcome will be, you will laugh and cry along with the wonderfully witty and dare I say delightfully twisted characters.

I love each and every one of them. When our teens take a journey to Amsterdam, Mr Green paints a beautifully descriptive and picturesque moment in time that I will not easily forget, for it is etched forever in my heart and soul.
I can not believe how long it has taken to get the second in the Infinite days series the first came out in 2010.... and still we have to wait to get our hands on Stolen Nights ( Amazon says: Feb 2013) but Goodreads states that is will be published June 21, 2012 by St. Martin's Griffin.
The UK will get it July 5, 2012. So I will be getting mine thru Book Depositary if it wont be here till freaking 2013.

Here is the short description from Goodreads.
The pulse-quickening, heartbreaking, devastatingly powerful follow-up to INFINITE DAYS.

Lenah Beaudonte should be dead. But having sacrificed herself to save another, she finds herself awakening with strange powers that are neither vampire nor human - and with a new enemy on her trail. In her vampire life, Lenah had thought that being human was all she ever wanted; but the human heart suffers pain, heartbreak and loss. With her new powers growing and the dark force of the Nex after her soul, Lenah faces a choice: between the mortal love of gorgeous Justin, whose passion fed her human soul, and taking a different path to become the mistress of her own destiny, wherever that may lead...

Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.

Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.

But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.
Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn’t dead.

Not this time.

But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.

Her captor, John Hayden, claims it’s for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they’ve come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.

But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.

And unless Pierce is careful, this time there will be no escape.
As Zora begins to suspect that there may be more than luck behind Emerson’s good land, she discovers an extraordinary, astonishing power of her own: the ability to sense water under the parched earth. When her aunt hires her out as a “springsweet” to advise other settlers where to dig their wells, Zora feels the burden of holding the key to something so essential to survival in this unforgiving land.

Even more, she finds herself longing for love the way the prairie thirsts for water.
When Marshall and Elyse wake up in each other’s arms with zero memory of how they got there or who they are, it’s the start of a long journey through their separate pasts and shared future.

Terrified by their amnesia, the two make a pact to work together to find the answers that could jog their missing memories. As they piece together clues, they discover they’re in the idyllic mountain resort town of Summer Falls, where everyone seems mysteriously happy, but as Marshall and Elyse quickly learn, darkness lurks beneath the town’s perfect facade. Not only is the town haunted by sinister ghosts, but none of its living inhabitants retain bad memories of anything—not the death of Marshall’s mom, not the hidden shame in Elyse’s family, not even the day-to-day anguish of high school.

When Mason Starling rescues an unconscious young man from the ravages of a terrible storm—and he rescues her from the otherworldly creatures lurking in that storm—little does she know her whole life is about to spiral dramatically, mystically out of control. Someone is trying to kill her, someone else is trying to use her, and the only one who seems willing to help her is the tantalizing, dangerous stranger who can’t even remember who—or what—he is. All he remembers is his name: Fennrys Wolf.

What Fennrys doesn’t know is that, thanks in part to his past actions, a crack has appeared in the barrier between the mortal world and the Beyond Realms. The crack has opened up a nexus of dark energy in the middle of the East River and it’s attracting the attention of powerful entities on both sides of the rift.

Because of that, a longstanding truce involving the members of several ancient underworld cartels is now in jeopardy. Mason, Fennrys, and the students of elite Gosforth Academy—a neutral-ground “safe haven” for children of the Families—soon find themselves caught in the crossfire as the servants of the warring pantheons fight to see whose gods come out on top...and whose demons go down in flames.

Set in New York City, with all its dark, gritty sparkle, the STARLING saga explores the spaces between the worlds and the realms of the ancient gods… only a heartbeat beyond. It’s a tale spun from ancient mythologies—Norse and Greek and Egyptian—filled to the brim with adventure, danger, and romance, and played out against the backdrop of a city with its own siren-song.

Photo via Barnes & Noble

Last week we reported on the CW Network picking up the rights to Kiera Cass’ upcoming novel, ‘The Selection’. BackStage has now confirmed that the series has just been given it’s production location and official casting director.
“The Selection,” will shoot in Vancouver, but it’s being cast in Los Angeles by Barbara Stordahl and Angela Terry. The pilot, from Warner Bros. Television, is set 300 years in the future. The protagonist is a poor woman who is chosen to compete in a contest, the winner of which will be crowned queen of a war-torn nation. No shoot date has been set yet. Stordahl/Terry also casts ABC Family’s “Jane by Design” and TNT’s “Leverage.” Source: Back Stage

The cast of Beautiful Creatures has been growing seemingly exponentially in the past couple weeks. It began when Viola Davis, nominated for Best Actress this year for her performance in The Help, signed on and just yesterday it was revealed that Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert have joined on. Today they've added a two-time Oscar winner.

Emma Thompson, according to THR, is the newest actress to join the ranks of Beautiful Creatures. The film is based on the novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and is being both written and directed by Richard LaGravanese. Described as a "supernatural coming-of-age story," the story follows a young boy and girl who investigate a curse that has been haunting the girl's family for generations. Thompson is set to play a dual role in the movie, portraying the character of Mrs. Lincoln - described as being "small town religious firebrand" - and the witch that possesses Mrs. Lincoln, named Sarafine. The book is from a series called The Caster Chronicles and the fourth book is due out this year.

Thompson has a number of titles due out this year including Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black III (in which she plays the new head of MIB), Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time (which she is narrating), Pixar's Brave (where she is voicing the mother of the main character), and Richard Laxton's Effie (based on an original script she wrote).

While I can't say I've seen anything from O'Connell or Englert, having Davis and Thompson in supporting roles is a good sign for any project. Casting seems to be developing quickly, so keep checking back for more about Beautiful Creatures.

Keeper of the demon of Promiscuity, Paris is cursed to never be with the same woman twice. The one exception to this hellish rule is the enemy he should never have fallen for: Sienna, the mortal woman he’d lost too soon.

Now, Paris will embark on a perilous voyage to the heavens’ darkest realm in a quest to bring Sienna back where she belongs—by his side. But this quest is just the beginning of his journey. Because they’re now caught in the middle of a war between the gods, the angels and the creatures of the night. And their next move could either bind them eternally…or tear them apart forever….
Hot on the heels of Chris Crutcher, Bethany Griffin visited the 23rd floor for the first time this week. We tried plying her with croissants to get her to tell us what will happen in the sequel to Masque of the Red Death, but she was too good at keeping secrets. All we know is that there are more bats. Creepy! Bethany also signed stacks of ARCs, so good luck to those who’ve entered some of the giveaways!
Good luck to all the peeps who have entered in goodreads give-away :) fingers crossed~THE OPTIMISTIC PESSIMIST ~http://www.blogger.com/profile/11532019586722162192noreply@blogger.com0
